Listen Up: Podcasts we're loving!

Remember the days of 3 network TV channels?  Feels like ancient history compared to what’s available today:  hundreds of tv channels, subscription services that make binge-watching entire seasons of a show so easy, e-readers, blogs and now… podcasts.  I’ll admit, I was a little late to the podcast party - now it seems everyone and their sister has one.  Who has time to listen to them all?  Probably no one, which is why it’s handy to have guides to help navigate your way to find the ones that spark your interest.

Here’s a brief list of some of our favorites:

(approx. 60 minutes)

Hosted by national treasure Ira Glass, it’s one of the oldest and still one of the best hours of listening you can spend.   So celebrated it’s almost a cliché to include it, but how can we not?

One particularly outstanding recent episode: Five Women focuses on one of the #MeToo stories, told by multiple women linked to the same accuser in a Rashomon-like structure that layers their perspectives and experiences.

(approx. 30-50 minutes)

Hosted by Slate staff writer Leon Neyfakh, the podcast gives listeners a chance to understand what it felt like to live through one of our recent political scandals.  Season 1 focuses on Nixon and Watergate, Season 2 features Bill Clinton’s impeachment.  Meticulously researched, it presents the stories of the various characters from a specific, historical period of time.

(approx. 15-20 minutes)

Season 1:   12 Women Trailblazers.  Mini backstories & insights from some of the most influential women in recent history.  The fun twist?  The subject’s identity is a mystery until the end.

(approx..2-3 hours)

Dax Shepard, Actor/Comic, recovering addict and husband of Kristin Bell, hosts a show with celebrity guests with an eye to getting them to share their stories and challenges.  His conversational style is low-key and witty.  Having overcome his own struggles, his gratitude and general “good guy-ness” shines through.

(approx. 50-60 minutes per segment)

Karina Longworth, former film critic for LA Weekly recounts secret or forgotten stories of Hollywood history from the early days to now.  A movie history buff’s dream.

(approx. 40-60 minutes)

Gwyneth Paltrow and her Chief Content Officer talk with doctors, spiritual leaders, leading thinkers and CEOs.  An episode we particularly liked is “What We Got Wrong About Nutrition” with Dr. Mark Hyman on his new approach to health and chronic disease.  He believes the answer is adopting a “Food First” philosophy.  41:00

(approx. 40-60 minutes)

Sheri Salata, Exec Producer of “Oprah” teams up with lifelong friend Nancy Hala, chief brand strategist, both in their 50’s, embark on an adventurous exploration of health & wellness, they’re funny, smart and talk freely just as good friends do about their discoveries.

(approx. 40-60 minutes)

It’s Oprah plus guests.  ‘Nuff said.  (Except this: Inspiring)

This is just for starters - there’s plenty more on our “future listening” list.  Do you have a favorite podcast?  We’d love to hear all about it.
