What Does It Mean To Buy Non-GMO Skin Care Products?

March 13, 2020

Non-GMO sign in dirt

GMO is the acronym for Genetically Modified Organism. More specifically, according to the World Health Organization, GMOs are “organisms in which the genetic material (DNA) has been altered in such a way that does not occur naturally.” This alteration is most commonly achieved by combining genetic fragments of two different organisms or inserting DNA from one organism into another.

As Healthline explains, advocates of GMOs say that they help crops resist insects and disease, tolerate extreme weather and drought conditions, and yield greater harvests. They also claim that GMOs can enhance the nutritional value of plants. However, critics point out that GMOs are often treated with harmful chemicals and question the long-term health effects of consuming them. More research is still needed to confirm or deny their fears.

Non-GMO Makeup and Cosmetics

GMOs are not limited to food. They are also found in skin care and makeup. Many widely available cosmetics are made with commonly genetically modified ingredients such as wheat, soy, fruits, and corn.  Proponents of non-GMO skin care products express the same health concerns with cosmetics as they do with food. Such is based on their theory that because GMOs are more resistant to pesticides, consumers are exposed to risks of certain types of cancer and body systems damage. Again, studies to substantiate those claims are far from complete.

Non-GMO products are not subject to any federal regulation concerning the labeling of their products; however, non-GMO cosmetics manufacturers are generally eager to share that information on their product labels. If you feel better about steering clear of the health concerns expressed by non-GMO advocates, then look for “non-GMO” on your products’ packaging.
