Do Face Masks Hydrate Skin?

May 12, 2022

Face masks can hydrate the skin- depending on the ingredients. Not all masks are created equally or do the same thing. Some face masks can dry the skin out, especially when they contain ingredients like clay and charcoal. But the good news for those of us with dry skin, is that we have both hydrating and moisturizing  options to give our skin a little extra treat when it needs more nourishment.

There are many factors that can contribute to dry skin including a compromised barrier. In layman’s terms, this means your skin will show the signs of dehydration, flakiness, irritation, breakouts, have a dull tone or just overall not happy. Often, when things like this show up, we have the tendency to want to correct it and add too many products and then the skin just gets unhappier. What your skin needs at times like this is the “less is more” approach and getting back to the basics of hydration and moisturization.

Let’s not forget what the diminishing levels of estrogen can do or even those times of the month when your hormonal levels may be in flux. Estrogen helps our skin retain moisture and as levels dip, dryness can become more pronounced.

Moisturizing Masking To Combat Dry Skin

Our favorite product to mask with is our hydrating balm. It  is a magical multitasking powerhouse in a little glass jar. There are a potent blend of 15 plant and essential oils and no added water.

A few of the notable ingredients include organic beeswax which acts as a breathable, physical barrier to help seal in the moisturizing emollient oils.  Organic rosehip seed oil is highly regenerative to help even out the skin tone and soften and nourish as it’s rich in essential fatty acids and vitamin A.  Organic seabuckthorn is ultra-moisturizing and is rich in antioxidants and is what gives the balm its rich, golden hue.

The beauty is the multitasking nature of this little jar of golden goodness. You can use it as an intensive 30 minute moisture mask or as a luxe overnight sleeping mask.

How To Mask

For a luxe overnight sleeping mask, apply a generous spritzing of the essential hydrating tonic to cleansed skin and then apply a pea sized amount of the essential serum balm and lightly massage into the skin.  You can either let this sit on your face, neck, and chest for 30 minutes and then gently remove any excess by patting your skin with a fresh, dry cloth.  Or, even better, leave it on for 30 minutes before bed, apply another misting of the tonic and then massage into the skin for a few minutes and sleep with the product on overnight.

There’s something that makes a mask feel special and like a bit of me-time that doesn’t require a trip to the spa and still feels indulgent. I also love being able to use something I have in more than one way and no need to worry about all the waste that comes with the single use sheets masks and excess packaging.  Good for you, good for the environment.
