Is Age 40 Too Late for Skincare?

It’s never too late to ensure your skin gets what it needs most at age 40 and beyond. Establishing a skincare routine that gives your skin the care it needs and deserves is always a good idea! There is plenty you can do to keep your skin looking fresh, supple, and smooth by keeping it simple with nourishing oil-based formulas high in antioxidants and essential fatty acids. Although it's impossible to stop the signs of aging altogether, it is possible to slow photoaging down significantly.

Why Is My Skin Changing?

Our skin metabolism starts slowing down as early as our 20s. As skin ages, it can no longer hold as much moisture, and it doesn’t produce the amount of oil as effectively as it once did. After you reach your 40s, the effects of sun damage are more noticeable: lines and wrinkles deepen, hyperpigmentation increases, and skin feels drier.

Properly hydrated skin is healthy skin. Lack of moisture is one of the main culprits of aging skin, so maintaining and repairing your skin's moisture is essential. The best way to care for your skin is by protecting your skin barrier—you want to keep it healthy so that it's able to retain moisture and resist damage.

Estrogen and collagen production slows as we age. Losing collagen and natural sebum (oil) decreases skin firmness and elasticity. It can cause the skin to thin, sag, and become dry. Collagen is a fibrous protein that gives the skin its elasticity, plumpness, and strength, while natural oils give it moisture and glow.

It Is Never Too Late To Have Healthy Skin

Check your skincare routine to ensure your skin gets what it needs most. Keep it simple with nourishing oil-based formulas with ingredients high in antioxidants and essential fatty acids. These will help combat dryness by maintaining a healthy barrier and keeping skin hydrated and moisturized. Lightly exfoliate occasionally. Gentleness is key.

Regardless of your age, you will see benefits from a consistent skincare routine.

NYC dermatologist Dr. Michelle Yagoda believes that up to 80% of aging is due to lifestyle; good skin care habits, exercise, eating healthy, 7-8 hours of sleep per night, and drinking lots of water are key.

Skincare Tips for Aging Skin

Sun Protection

Sun damage is the number one contributor to signs of aging. Experts say that 90% of preventable aging comes from daily exposure to UV light over time. SPF can help delay changes associated with aging, like dark spots, wrinkles, and, specifically, the damage UV rays cause to elastin in the skin. The breakdown of elastin fibers causes the skin to sag, stretch, and lose its ability to snap back after stretching.

"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" is the motto here. Wearing a mineral facial sunscreen with SPF 30 or above should be your first step in your routine — every day.

Oil-Based Skincare

The beauty of facial oil is that it's gentle and helps to replenish the skin's decreasing natural oils. Plus, it's effortless to customize depending on what your skin needs.

Hydrated Skin

Getting proper hydration into the skin is basic. Hydrating topical ingredients that work best include aloe and glycerin, which act as moisture magnets, drawing moisture from the air to the skin.

Moisturize Daily

Simply moisturize daily, and you’ll see a huge difference. Moisturization includes oils that act as emollients for the skin barrier. In its healthiest state, it keeps moisture trapped in the skin rather than evaporating. Oils like camellia and avocado are particularly beneficial and nourishing, maintaining a healthy barrier with emollients that keep the water in.

Topical Vitamin C

Vitamin C is an excellent multi-tasker for aging skin. It supports your body's own collagen production, helping to make your skin appear plump. Vitamin C is also an antioxidant that provides anti-ultraviolet protection. A Vitamin C Serum can help brighten skin and even out skin tone aka helping to reduce the appearance of dark spots.

How Kari Gran Skincare Can Help

At Kari Gran, "anti-aging" is out. Healthy skin is always in. As we age, we don't need more skincare products; we need better ones: products with natural, oil-based ingredients that focus on health and hydration, not youth and perfection. Kari Gran is dedicated to giving our skin the nourishment it needs so we look good and feel great.

Our core Skincare System, including our Cleansing Oil, Hydrating Tonic, and Peptide Serum with Matrixyl, combined with our mineral SPF, provides the hydration, moisturization, and protection you need to keep your skin barrier strong and healthy.

We like Diane Von Furstenberg’s attitude: “My face carries all my memories. Why should I erase them?”
