The September Issue: A Review

And Anna Wintour knows fashion. This September marks the 125th anniversary issue of Vogue. One out of 10 American women have this issue delivered to their homes; since it’s about the size of an old phone book, it makes you feel for the postal carriers. “The September Issue” documentary will feel very familiar If you saw the movie “The Devil Wears Prada.” This film shows the real life, behind-the-scenes process of how the “bible” of the fashion world comes together.   Near the beginning of the movie, we see Andre Leon Talley, the 6’6” contributing editor at large, flamboyantly wearing...

The Mind-Body Connection: Food for a Healthy Brain and Happy Mood

There's no doubt about it: what we eat, and how much we eat, has a direct impact on our physical health. But did you know that those same choices also influence mood, mental alertness, memory, and emotional well being? Food can act as medicine, have a neutral effect, or it can be a poison to the body and mind. When food acts as a poison, it creates inflammation, which alters the body's balance of nutrients, hormones, and neurotransmitters. This directly affects your body's ability to manage and heal from stress or illness. Below are four common culprits that can be...

Ingredient Spotlight: Macadamia Nut Oil + Garden Herb Couscous Recipe

Long before the days of Kari Gran the skin care company, I was known to purchase some of my favorite skin care items in the aisles of the local Co-op. I’ve always loved a good multitasker and organic coconut oil was my favorite thing (and still is) for cooking and using on my body after the shower. I was pulled aside in the TSA line and quizzed about the small $20 jar of coconut oil I had in my carry on (hey, I considered it a solid and a food). When asked what I did with it, I quickly responded:...

THE SMART PART – STEP 3: PREP AND PACKAGE

Preparing healthy and delicious meals in less time just takes a little scheduling. My favorite tip: cook once, eat twice (or more!) This is the best way I know to make mealtime more efficient. You might have heard this referred to as "batch cooking.” Here's what you do: • Pick a cooking day. Instead of cooking every night, pick a day or two when you'll cook for the week ahead. Make it fun by turning on some good music and getting the whole family involved. Sure, you'll spend a little more time in the kitchen on your cooking day(s), but you'll save an extra few...
