THE BEST SKIN CITIES HAVE LOW POLLUTION

Discover Fit and Health published their Top 10 Best Skin Cities last fall.  Topping the list:  Seattle, my cloudy city. Seattle topping the list is no surprise.  We rarely see the sun.  In fact, when I travel to sunnier climates with my wee ones, they wince at the sun and yelp out, “too sunny!”  I fear I’m raising vampires.

Here’s the list of top skin cites:

  1.  Seattle, Washington
  2. Milwaukee, Wisconsin
  3. Honolulu, Hawaii
  4. San Francisco, California
  5. New York City
  6. Cheyenne, Wyoming
  7. Washington, D.C
  8. San Antonio, Texas
  9. Billings, Montana
  10. Flagstaff, Arizona

What I did curious about this list is that sunnier climates such as Honolulu, Hawaii and Flagstaff, Arizona made the list of best skin cities.  Apparently, their low levels of pollution are beneficial to your skin, so long as you up your daily SPF to 30+.

This pollution bit is fairly new to me.  Yes, I know pollution is bad for your lungs, but it is also one of main culprits of skin damage.  All that disgusting smog and dirt that hang in the air meet up with the sun’s ultraviolet rays and make a toxic cocktail of free radicals.  These free radicals harm your skin by deteriorating its structural support which leads to wrinkles and loss of elasticity.

Solution?  Well, we should all move to Hawaii.  If this isn’t an option, then cleanse and moisturize your skin daily.  It simple and effective (although the Hawaii option is appealing too).
