Facial massage with essential oils  is nothing new.  It’s a staple of a spa facial and a nice luxurious way to relax, firm up your skin and look refreshed.  Massaging your face with essential oils in one of the most effective ways to keep your skin looking younger and is a great alternative to botox and other “procedures.”  Most of us wait until we have a professional facial to massage with natural essential oils but there is no need to.  Some simple steps will allow you all the benefits of a facial while brewing your morning coffee or watching your favorite show at night.

I tend toward the morning facial massage.  There are mornings when I wake and my face looks like a Picasso painting.  I am in my forties and have two young kids, one whose rooster-esque 5am call sounds less like “cock-a-doodle-doo” and more like “I HAVE TO GO POTTY!!!”  It’s a jarring way to start a day but I’m mentally getting used to it.  My face is another story.  At times, my face is so puffy that if I put on make up at 5:30am it will look clownish when I see myself at 9am.  My face needs time to settle into its usual placement before I primp and preen.

In actuality, the face is full of muscles and when they age or are not used, they atrophy and sag.  It’s a more tail tell sign of aging than laugh lines.  Tension accumulates in the face as well and those muscles (jaw?) need the same kneading your shoulders do have carrying around a small child or your laptop all day.

So I use the Kari Gran Essential Serum and techniques from a recent article on the benefits of massaging with natural essential oils.  Here is the skinny on how to start your own facial massage regimen:

1. Start on the cheeks. Draw big circles using your fingers or knuckles, moving upward.

2. On one side of the face at a time, rub from the midjaw to the cheekbone with long upward strokes, pressing firmly for a moment at the top.

3. Work smile lines with upward strokes, from the corners of the mouth to the corners of the nose.

4. With your fingers, lift and hold both brows to open up the eye area. Rub in a circle around the eye socket out to the temples, eventually expanding to include the forehead.

5. To plump lips, use thumbs and index fingers to quickly pluck all across the top and bottom lip, which stimulates blood flow.

It takes a while to get the motions down.  You Tube has plenty of videos  to show helpful techniques.  Be prepared to look like an idiot.  More than once, my husband has looked over and asked, “Are you okay?” when I’m drumming on my jawline during an episode of “Amazing Race.”  After a week of massaging with natural oil – I use Kari Gran’s Cleansing Oil for an evening facial massage, my jowls are less “jowly” and I’m looking less like a Picasso and more like a Renoir by 6am (okay, Renoir is a stretch, but I do look less tired).
