Beating sugar cravings post-Halloween takes more effort than then all of my son’s Batman and Robin superpowers combined.  I’m left in a sugary fog that leaves me unmotivated, moody and craving more sugar.  No matter how hard I try, I end up eating too much candy (and bad candy at that) the week of Halloween.  This year, in an attempt to NOT eat a full bag of Halloween candy prior to October 31st, I only give out candy I won’t eat, Dum Dum suckers, thus beating sugar cravings before they begin.  Now I am known on our block as the woman who gives out lame candy. 

We do an excellent job keeping the Halloween feast away from our wee ones.  This year we introduce the Switch Witch to our young boys.  In exchange for about 90% of their Halloween haul, the Switch Witch gives children a toy they have long wanted.  Our four-year-old thought about it and said he wanted to talk to her about specific candy he could keep.  Yes, as with most things, he wants to negotiate – this time it is the terms of the candy exchange.  After showing him a photo of the toy he will receive (yes, the Switch Witch does email), he is on board, willing to give up all but the darkest of chocolate to get his HeatWave Rescue Bot.  Our toddler is too young to articulate his views, so I take his head nod as an affirmative.

So our boys get their toys and we are left with the Switch Witch’s loot sitting on a high shelf in the pantry.  Thus begins an annual feeding frenzy that ends only when all the good candy is consumed.  Months of healthy eating habits down the drain, my husband and I are reeling from sugar withdrawals. Yes,sugar is bad for you but the cycle of cravings are hard to crush.

So for all of you beating your sugar cravings and trying to get back on track, I have an effective recipe that is filling and sweet.  It’s also gluten free, dairy free, vegan and low glycemic.  Taken from Michelle Babb’s EatPlayBe website, it’s my go-to for satiating a sweet tooth without leaving me lethargic.   As a bonus, my kids love this recipe too – just don’t try to hand it out in lieu of Halloween candy.

Nutty Coconut Energy Truffles


2 cups walnuts

1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

pinch sea salt

½ cup pitted Medjool dates

½ cup dried cherries

2 tablespoons coconut butter or oil

¼ teaspoon almond extract

2 tablespoons peanut or almond butter (optional)  unsweetened, shredded coconut


1.Place the walnuts, cinnamon, and sea salt into a food processor. Process until nuts are finely ground.

2.Add the dates, cherries, coconut butter, and almond extract. Process again until combined and sticky. If you want more protein, add the nut butter.

3.Roll the mixture into small balls, then roll in shredded coconut. These keep well in the refrigerator and can also be frozen.
